The first day after new auto glass: what to do and what to skip

The job is done, the technician has packed up and the car looks finished. For a door window it is. For a windshield or back glass, the adhesive that holds the new glass in place is still settling, and the first day is when a little care counts. Here is what Impex Auto Glass asks of Charlotte drivers after each kind of job, and why.

After a new windshield

A windshield is bonded into the car’s frame with urethane adhesive. Impex puts the job at about one hour plus a short curing period, and says drivers are back on the road within two hours. The technician tells you when the car is ready to drive.

That time is not arbitrary. The Auto Glass Safety Council describes a minimum drive-away time, the time a vehicle should stay put after installation so the adhesive can bond, and says it varies with the type and brand of adhesive and the weather at the time. It matters because the windshield is part of the car’s passenger restraint system: the Council says it has to be installed properly for the airbags to deploy safely, and that it helps keep occupants in the car.

For the next 24 hours

  • Skip the car wash. Impex’s aftercare is to avoid washing the car for 24 hours, so water jets and brushes stay off the fresh molding.
  • Close the doors gently. Also from Impex’s aftercare: no slammed doors for the first 24 hours.
  • Leave anything the technician fitted alone. If there is tape on the edges of the glass, ask the technician when it can come off.
  • Ask about anything you are unsure of. The technician knows the adhesive used and the conditions on the day, so ask before you leave rather than guess.

If your car has a forward camera

Cars with lane keeping, collision warning or adaptive cruise control often have a camera behind the windshield. Impex performs ADAS calibration on site immediately after the replacement when the car requires it. If a warning light comes on afterwards, or the lane keeping feels off, call Impex rather than ignoring it.

After new back glass

Back glass is usually bonded like a windshield, and it also carries the defroster lines. Impex puts back glass replacement at one to two hours, and asks you not to use the rear defroster for 24 hours afterwards. The same car wash and door advice applies. If the cabin had glass in it from the break, check the seat tracks and the trunk for any last pieces before a passenger finds them.

After a new door window

Door glass is the exception. It is held by the window regulator inside the door rather than bonded in adhesive, and Impex says you can drive immediately after a side window replacement, which takes 30 to 60 minutes. Run the window up and down once or twice before you leave, and check that it seals at the top. If it sticks, rattles or whistles at highway speed, call Impex back.

After a chip repair

A chip repair leaves the original windshield in place, so there is no adhesive to cure around the edges and usually nothing to wait for. You will see a faint mark where the stone hit; that is normal. If the chip starts to spread again, call. The page on windshield repair in Charlotte NC explains what a repair can and cannot do.

Charlotte weather and new glass

Cure time depends partly on the weather, which is why a mobile appointment on a wet day may be moved or brought to the shop on David Cox Rd instead. Once the glass is in, park out of heavy rain for the first day if you have the choice, and do not worry about an ordinary hot afternoon: the technician sets the drive-away time with the conditions in mind.

When to call Impex back

  • Water inside the car near the new glass.
  • Wind noise or a whistle that was not there before.
  • A dashboard warning about the camera, lane keeping or collision braking.
  • Molding that has lifted or come loose.
  • A door window that sticks, rattles or does not seal.
